What is Jaundice?

Jaundice is a medical condition in which the skin and sclera (white part of eyes) get yellowish. Jaundice is the result of a high level of bilirubin in your body. Bilirubin is formed by the liver from the breakdown of red blood cells.

 

Causes:

Jaundice is caused due to various underlying health disorders that either leads to the production of too much bilirubin or prevents the liver from effective disposal. Some of the causes of jaundice are

  • Hepatitis A, B, C, D, E
  • Alcohol misuse
  • Pancreatic cancer
  • Yellow fever
  • Weil’s disease
  • Acute pancreatitis
  • Bile duct obstruction
  • Gall stone
  • Sickle cell anemia
  • Liver cancer

 

Symptoms:

  • Yellow skin
  • Yellow sclera
  • Pale stool
  • Dark yellow urine
  • Liver pain (patient feels like a pain in the abdomen)
  • May have fever, chills, flu-like symptoms

 

Home Remedies:

  • Drink plenty of clean water. Boiled water is preferred.
  • Drink juice from grapes, orange, and/or pomegranate.
  • Grind papaya leaves to paste form. Consume with water every morning and evening.
  • Consume 200-250 grams of plum on empty stomach.
  • Drink a glass of carrot juice thrice a day.
  • Cut radish into small slices. Add a pinch of stone salt, black pepper powder, and little lemon juice. Consume every morning on empty stomach.
  • Grind 2-3 cloves of garlic and consume with milk every morning and evening.
  • Consume 2-3 glasses of sugarcane juice a day.
  • Thoroughly mix 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder in a glass of warm water and consume thrice a day.
  • Increase the amount of coriander, mint, and tomato in the diet.
  • Eat fruits like papaya, apple, lychee, plum, black plum, etc.
  • Consume banana every morning and evening with honey.
